An Atlanta man has died days after he was involved in a chain-reaction crash on I-75 in Cobb County that sent a child to a hospital, police said Friday.

The crash Tuesday night collected three vehicles near the Delk Road exit in Marietta. Northbound traffic was heavy, and traffic had come to a halt just before 9 p.m. when the first vehicle, a 1998 Toyota Camry, crashed into the back of the second, police said.

The impact sent the second vehicle, a 2016 Camry, into a passenger van.

Investigators determined that the driver of the 1998 Camry “failed to slow for the stopped traffic ahead of him,” Marietta police spokesman Officer Jared Rakestraw said in a news release. He was identified as 72-year-old Pantelis Alourdas of Atlanta.

Alourdas was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in critical condition. He died Thursday at the hospital, according to police.

Five other people were injured in the crash, but none of their injuries are considered life-threatening, Rakestraw said Wednesday. An Arkansas woman and a child in the newer model Camry were also taken to Kennestone for treatment, and three others in a Mercedes transport van were not seriously injured.

Rakestraw said investigators do not know why Alourdas did not slow down before slamming into the Camry in front of him. The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Marietta police Officer C. Henry at 770-794-5364.
