A man arrested for allegedly trying to steal a pellet gun and black gloves from a northwest Atlanta Wal-Mart has now been charged with a string of armed robberies in Buckhead, police said Tuesday.

Atlanta police Sgt. Gregory Lyon said that when William Berry, 37, was apprehended Feb. 1 at the Wal-Mart store on Howell Mill Road, Officer L. Jones “realized that this shoplifter matched the description of a male that had been targeting Buckhead businesses.”

Berry was also carrying a backpack containing clothing that matched the description of items worn by the suspect in a robbery four days earlier at a Subway store in the 2400 block of Marietta Boulevard, according to Lyon.

Lyon said that after conducting photo line-ups, Berry was positively identified as the gunman responsible for the Subway robbery as well as the Jan. 6 and Jan. 23 armed robberies of a Walgreens store in the 2900 block of Peachtree Road, the Jan. 7 armed robbery of a Radio Shack in the 2600 block of Piedmont Road and the Jan. 11 armed robbery of a Mattress Firm store in the 2600 block of Piedmont.

Berry is being held without bond in the Fulton County Jail.
