An Athens man was arrested Sunday and charged with assaulting an unborn child.

Javatavis Lakil Johnson, 22, allegedly punched his 19-year-old pregnant girlfriend in the stomach during a fight, The Athens Banner-Herald reports.

Police said Johnson arrived at his girlfriend’s home Saturday night and started drinking alcohol and arguing with her. He allegedly knocked her to the ground, kicked her and choked her.

When she escaped and called the police, Johnson left the apartment.

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office arrested Johnson Sunday morning on charges of aggravated assault, simple battery and assault on an unborn child.

Johnson also has a 1-year-old child with his girlfriend, police said.

Johnson was released after posting an $8,000 bond, the newspaper reported. The condition of the victim and her unborn child have not been made public.
