The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted recently to proceed with construction of Mabry Park — eight years after the land’s purchase.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be 3 p.m. May 18 with participation by the Friends of Mabry Park and Cobb Commissioner JoAnn Birrell from that district.

The 26.5-acre Mabry property, at 4470 Wesley Chapel Road in Marietta, was bought in 2008 with funds from the 2006 Parks Bond Program.

This passive park will include trails and picnic areas, according to the park’s 2011 Master Plan.

Parks officials were authorized last week by the commissioners to negotiate the final scope and fee with AECOM, the top-ranked firm of seven bidding firms.
