A man who attacked his ex-girlfriend’s new lover was shot and killed Monday afternoon in what police described as self-defense.

Matthew Hunt, 24, went to Lenox Woods apartments at 2255 Lenox Road in Buckhead to find his ex-girlfriend, police said.

Just before 3 p.m. Monday, the new boyfriend arrived home — the woman was staying at the new boyfriend’s apartment — and Hunt attacked him, Atlanta police Maj. Renee Propes said.

The two men fought and the new boyfriend was able to reach a gun inside his apartment and shoot Hunt, police said.

Hunt later died at Grady Memorial Hospital, authorities said.

Police would not name the new boyfriend, nor Hunt’s ex-girlfriend.

Hunt had recently gotten out of jail, police said. And apparently, he’d had a previous incident trying to find the same woman, Propes said.

“He came looking for her and kicked in the wrong door,” she said.

Neighbors on Monday said in March a man fitting Hunt's description forced his way into the apartment across from where the new boyfriend lives.

Propes said charges were not likely to be filed against the new boyfriend.

“It looks like it’s going to be [considered] self defense,” she said.
