The Lilburn City Council voted recently to approve a moratorium barring new permits or applications for permits for wireless communications devices and facilities in the city’s right of way.

The increased number of cell providers and growing demand for better coverage have resulted a number of requests for new installation of wireless communication devices and facilities within the city. Lilburn’s current regulations were adopted when communications devices and facilities were primarily limited to antennas mounted on cell towers. Now a variety of alternative technologies such as distributed antenna system networks and other small cell systems can be installed on much smaller structures.

Imposing a moratorium allows the city time to prepare and present an ordinance regulating the installation of such devices and facilities. The moratorium will be in place until Feb.10.
