A house in Snellville caught on fire late Thursday afternoon after it was struck by lightning as scattered storms moved through the metro Atlanta area.

Gwinnett County fire crews responded to the incident in the 6000 block of Timerloch Court after a neighbor heard a loud pop and saw that the house was on fire, fire department spokesman Lt. Jerrod Barrett said. Crews used multiple hoses and a ladder truck to extinguish the flames, which, along with the water, caused significant damage, he said.

No one was home at the time of the fire. The homeowner’s sister later arrived on the scene and said the house belongs to a chaplain in the U.S. military who is at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, according to Barrett.

There were other reports of trees down and scattered power outages in the metro area.
