LifeLine Animal Project is making it easy to adopt a new best friend this weekend.
LifeLine's DeKalb and Fulton County animal shelters are hosting a four-day Adopt-a-Thon. The shelters are adopting out animals at no charge from now until Monday, July 25.
"We have hit the no-kill threshold over the past six months," spokeswoman Karen Hirsch said, "and we want to continue that, but we need the community's support."
Hirsch said the shelters are at capacity and simply have "too many animals."
"We have about 840 (animals) at the DeKalb and Fulton animal shelters," Hirsch said.
LifeLine’s FCAS Director Lara Hudson said her shelter is beyond its comfortable capacity.
“This shelter was originally designed to house only 80 animals at a time, but can comfortably house about 250,” Lara said. “Today we are housing 369 dogs and cats, so we are asking the community to step in and save lives by adopting dogs and cats.”
LifeLine said that the adoption fee waiver includes spaying, neutering, microchipping and vaccinations.
DCAS Shelter Director Kerry Moyers-Horton said that those who can’t commit to adoption can foster a dog or cat.
“If people can open up their home for even a few weeks, it would be great for the animals in our care,” Moyers-Horton said.
LifeLine is working to “transform Atlanta into a no-kill community” by finding homes for as many animals as possible.
"We want to find them new homes as soon as possible, because we believe that every animal deserves to have a home," Hirsch said.
