A fourth Lidl Grocery Store in Georgia will be coming to 670 Whitlock Ave. in Marietta.

This 29,000-square-foot store will take the place of a 22,000-square-foot space that has been vacant since 2002 and will be demolished, according to the matter approved 7-0 recently by the Marietta City Council.

The other stores include 3821 Stone Mountain Highway SW, Snellville and two in Cobb County - 2641 Powder Springs Road SW, Marietta and 4844 Floyd Road SW, Mableton.

Established in 1973 in Germany, Lidl now has more than 10,500 stores in 29 countries as the fourth largest retailer in the world with 300,000 employees.

In the U.S. since 2017, Lidl has opened 65 stores in six states with more than 4,000 employees.

Speaking on behalf of her father who owns the adjacent 10,800-square-foot shopping center, real estate developer Carol Hammock appealed to the City Council to turn down or table the matter since about half of their shopping center will be shut down.

They claim Lidl will block its view.

However, Mayor Steve Tumlin pointed out the north-south alignment of their shopping center was their choice.

“You did the same thing to the buildings behind you 30 years ago. The old Kroger store had to move and sell to the county,” Tumlin noted.
