As the coronavirus pandemic continues to affect communities throughout Georgia and the country, many Atlanta organizations are coordinating to provide relief for affected families and individuals. The Atlanta region Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has ramped up their community work to provide food, offer education and aggregate service projects from around the area.
“We want to be a service to everyone in the community. Help clothe the poor, feed the hungry and show love to our neighbors everywhere,” said Tiffany Bird, the Atlanta region assistant communications director of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Since March, the church has donated thousands of dollars to help local communities in Atlanta and surrounding areas by working with nonprofit organizations, other faith-based food pantries and shelters. The church also sponsors JustServe, a free online resource where groups post service opportunities and publicize their volunteer needs.
“JustServe brings communities together by relieving suffering, caring for the poor and needy and enhancing the quality of life in the community,” said Bird.
The church also offers a free immigration legal clinic to the public in partnership with Emory University School of Law, and the next digital clinic will be offered on July 8. It is also offering virtual English classes for Spanish speakers.
“We believe that the best way to cope with the COVID 19 pandemic is to help each other,” said Tom Owen, director of communication in Atlanta for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
