The Lawrenceville City Council tabled a discussion Monday night to determine if the city will install free Wi-Fi service to the downtown area.

Director of Information Technology Kyle Parker presented cost estimates from Gwinnett-based Smart Wave Technologies of $35,874 for the nine-block downtown area and $24,181 for the Lawrenceville Lawn. Parker noted the company has installed similar service for Alpharetta, Sugar Hill, Roswell, Austin and San Jose, among others.

The city council requested more information, including a combined estimate and possible cost savings for both projects as well as any data from other cities on usage and popularity of providing free wireless service.
