The Lawrenceville City Council voted recently to purchase 104 East Crogan St. for $100,000. The property at the corner of East Crogan and Jackson Streets was at one time the home of Annie Ruth Butler. Her estate has agreed to sell the property to the city following some demolition and cleanup to remove asbestos and any other hazardous materials.

Lawrenceville Councilmember David Still noted, “The city is not in the habit of purchasing property to just sit on; the concept is to help to make others in the private market aware to redevelop these type of projects. It was just an opportune time to clean up an environmental hazard.”

City Manager Chuck Wasrbington said, “For the record, this is not as simple as just waiting for it to fall down and then we clean it up. There are some issues the property owner will have to take care of before we take ownership.”

According to the purchase agreement, “The property currently contains a house that is in need of repair and contains asbestos. Buyer is only willing to purchase the property if the house is removed and all debris properly removed and disposed of by Seller. Seller agrees to demolish the house and remove all debris on or before March 31, 2018.”
