The 21st annual Polar Bear Plunge into Lake Lanier has been postponed because of debris and muddy water, the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club said Monday.

The plunge occurs annually on New Year’s Day or New Year’s Eve, but the club was forced to postpone due to lake conditions.

“Excessive rain” over the past five days has caused the lake level to rise rapidly, and debris that has collected is a “major safety concern,” the club said in a release.

The Polar Bear Plunge raises money for the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club’s activities, which include recreational paddle sports classes for children.

Jumpers can win awards for best jump, best splash, oldest and youngest jumpers and best costume.

A new date for the event has not been set, but registration will re-open once that date is determined, the club said. Once rescheduled, the plunge will take place at its traditional location: Lake Lanier Olympic Park, located at 3105 Clarks Bridge Road in Gainesville.
