Kennesaw State University will spend $1.8 million to upgrade its front entrance along Chastain Road.

Kennesaw State University has embarked on a project to upgrade its main entrance along Chastain Road.

The $1.8-million project, which was approved in May by the Board of Regents, will include signs containing LED lights and the university's new "KS" logo formally unveiled in August as part of a rebranding strategy, the university said Monday.

KSU will also install a 5-foot-tall yellow brick wall on both sides of the Kennesaw State University Road entrance. The wall, which will curve along the front of Chastain Road, will have illuminated white acrylic letters that spell out ‘Kennesaw State University’ placed on top of the structure.

The sidewalk along the front entrance will be widened to 18 feet and the lawn will be regraded to accommodate the new signs, the school said.

The university will also install on both sides of the entrance six LED-illuminated acrylic light tubes that will be placed 20 feet above cast aluminum columns. The lights will be programmed to display a variety of color combinations, said Rhonda Henderson, assistant director of KSU’s Facilities-Design and Construction Services.

KSU said the project should be completed in January.  Officials also will install a 30-foot-tall sign on the lawn near Chastain and Frey Roads that will have five LED-illuminated light tubes on top of 19-foot brick columns. White acrylic ‘Kennesaw State University’ lettering, which will be placed on a black panel near the top of the sign, will span more than 60 feet from one end to the other, KSU said. The brick bases of several of the columns on both signs will have cast aluminum plaques with the KS logo in gold and Kennesaw State University spelled out in black underneath.

KSU began its fall semester Aug. 19. The preliminary freshmen enrollment was around 6,500 students, which is a 30-percent increase from fall 2018, university officials previously told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Kennesaw State University’s total enrollment last fall was about 35,400 students, making it one of the largest schools in the University System of Georgia. Final enrollment numbers will be available in October, university spokeswoman Tammy Demel previously told the AJC.
