A master plan for the Kemp Family Park in West Cobb was approved recently by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners by a 4-1 vote.
Opposed was Commissioner Bob Ott since funding to develop the park is not available.
Although there is no funding identified to develop six recently acquired park properties under the 2008 Parks Bond Program, Cobb PARKS has been allowed by most of the commissioners to complete the master planning process to be ready when potential future funding becomes available, according to PARKS Director Jimmy Gisi.
“Completion of these master plans also would allow PARKS staff to periodically complete some of the smaller items in-house as time permits,” Gisi said in a Jan. 14 memo.
The proposed Kemp Family Park consists of about 95 acres of mixed forest and open pasture land on Burnt Hickory Road between Acworth Due West and Old Mountain Roads.
Gisi said “the overwhelming public request” was for features characteristic of passive parks, taking advantage of the physical, natural and historic attributes of the property.
Among those details are slate and concrete trails, open fields, signage for the Civil War earthworks, a possible walkway that would connect to Lake Allatoona and keeping one of the two houses for a caretaker.
No new maintenance or operational costs are associated with the approval of this master plan.
