The Jonesboro City Council called a special meeting recently to discuss proposals submitted by local garbage companies. In June the council got notice from the Clayton County landfill that the price of garbage disposal would increase from $40 per ton to $100 per ton. Because the increase would put disposal costs over budget, the city is seeking less expensive options.

— Waste Management Inc. will would charge $164.52 per year or $13.71 per month for each resident.

— Republic Inc. will charge $178.44 per year or $14.87 per month.

The council discussed both options, listened to questions from residents and decided to schedule a public hearing to allow citizens more time to weigh in before the council makes a final decision. The time and date for the meeting will announced later this month.
