The Johns Creek City Council has approved a $2 million contract to replace natural grass with synthetic turf at two fields at Newtown Park and one at Shakerag Park.

The council on July 24 approved using the state contract with FieldTurf USA to expedite the work, taking advantage of a purchasing cooperative agreement and field specifications used by the Fulton County School System.

“The immediate implementation of synthetic turf fields will allow the fall seasons to occur with minimal disruption and will enable the leagues to greatly enhance their playability in conditions that would have otherwise been lost to rain,” according to a staff report to council.

The synthetic turf is for the main soccer field and the lacrosse field at Newtown Park, and the track field at Shakerag Park. Installation is expected to take up to 30 days. The work will be funded by the $40 million parks bond approved by residents in November.
