The Johns Creek City Council has approved a one-year continuation of the rental program at the Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater at Newtown Park.

The open-air venue, site of the city’s Summer Concert Series and Summer Farmers Market, opened in 2014 and has been available for rent since 2015, Recreation Manager Kirk Franz said in an agenda report to the council.

The city last year adopted a lower fee schedule for small-group/low-impact events: a base rental of $250 for Johns Creek residents, nonprofits and schools, and $1,000 for in-city for-profit and commercial organizations. Other fees start at $500 for larger local events and range up to $4,000 for commercial bookings from out of town.

In the past year, the amphitheater booked seven rentals, its most successful year to date for rentals. Renters were a dance theater, non-profit 5K, church picnic/concert, picnic for international visitors, a company event, a company picnic and a charity concert.
