The Johns Creek City Council has agreed to take responsibility for new streetlights to be installed by the state along Kimball Bridge Road (Ga. 120) from State Bridge to Jones Bridge roads.

The lighting is part of a Georgia Department of Transportation project to widen 1.25 miles of Kimball Bridge from two to four lanes, add 8- to 10-foot sidewalks on both sides and provide street and pedestrian lighting.

To construct the street lighting, GDOT requires Johns Creek to agree to operate, repair and maintain the lights after construction is completed. The annual cost to do so, including the cost of electricity, is estimated at $50,000. The state would continue to own the lights.

The lighting portion of the project is predicted to cost $1.5 million for materials and $1 million for labor. Federal funds are expected to cover 80 percent of the cost, and the state will pay the 20 percent local match, city officials said.
