Detectives are warning drivers about a police impersonator who tried to get into a teenage girl's car.
The teenage girl told investigators the impersonator pulled her over with flashing blue and red lights.
"This is a serious offense, impersonating a police officer. It's not funny," Alpharetta mother Julie Stallard said.
It happened when the teen turned onto Kimball Bridge Road from Old Milton Parkway Sunday in Alpharetta. Police said the 16-year-old was pulled over by a police impersonator
"Now I'm concerned if a police officer pulls me over, if it's a real police officer," resident Peggy Easton told Channel 2's Carl Willis.
It was the flashing lights that got her to stop, but the teen quickly realized that it wasn't a squad car and the man didn't look the part of a police officer.
The man in question was in a tan-colored sedan and, according to police, he asked the teen, "Can I get in?"
When she said no, police said he asked if she would pull over into a wooded area.
"As the mother of a daughter, all sorts of things run through your mind. You don't know what people are going to do these days," Stallard said.
"I have two little girls. I couldn't imagine somebody trying to get into my car and putting them in danger like that," said Lisa Molina.
But police say the teen noticed that the man wasn't wearing a badge and asked him if he was a real cop.
Police say the man simply said, "Whatever," and walked back to his car.
"I don't know what this person's intentions were, whether they just playing pranks or whatever ... but I hope they do find them," Stallard told Willis.
If motorists feels uneasy about stopping for a police officer attempting a traffic stop, they should call 911 and advise the dispatcher they are driving to a lighted area.
The dispatcher will let the officer know the motorist's intentions.
Alpharetta authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the possible suspect or vehicle to call their tip line at 678-297-6307.
