A woman was inside her Clayton County home when she looked out the window and saw prison inmates in her yard, Channel 2 Action News reported.
The men were supposed to be at what they thought was an abandoned home for prison detail work, but a family had recently moved into the home.
The woman, who asked not to be named, saw a man ring the doorbell, jiggle the doorknob and try looking through the front window, according to Channel 2.
She then called her boyfriend, Izell Granville, who pulled out his phone and watched the inmates on the home surveillance video.
“So at that time, even though it was (someone in) a uniform, I still wasn’t clear on why somebody would be doing that,” Granville said. “So, I directed her to call law enforcement and go in the room with my son and my newborn.”
The home had been considered abandoned by Clayton County code enforcement last year, Channel 2 reported, but detail work wasn’t assigned to it until more than a year later due to a backlog of paperwork.
Clayton County prison Warden Dennis Nelson said it was all a misunderstanding and that the inmates were assigned to landscaping detail.
As for making sure it doesn’t happen again, Nelson said: “I think we probably could’ve done a little more research.”
