The railroad bridge on Howell Mill Road at 14th Street, shut down Tuesday because of a water leak, passed an inspection early Wednesday, but the heavily traveled road remained closed at noon while crews tried to determine what caused a small sinkhole in the pavement just off the bridge.

The city’s Department of Watershed Management initially said that a leak had possibly damaged the bridge.

All lanes of Howell Mill Road are closed near 14th Street.

Watershed management spokeswoman Janet Ward told the AJC that crews so far have not determined the source of the problem. Crews were still trying to find the cause Wednesday afternoon.

Good alternates to get into the city are 17th Street and Northside Drive, Ward said.

If the road closure extends into the weekend, it could affect motorists headed to Philips Arena for Hawks games on Wednesday night and on Sunday.
