A pre-Civil War house at Nash Farm Park was declared surplus by a Jan. 17 vote of the Henry County Board of Commissioners. The Zachery House was moved there in 2007 at a cost of $36,000 with the intention of renovating it for use as a meeting space or event facility. The house has sat vacant and closed to the public ever since.
County officials indicated that it is not on the National Register of Historic Places and recent evaluations by contractors show a flooring system that is failing and would cost more than $300,000 to repair. Staff assured the commissioners that all avenues had been exhausted to ensure that the county would not be disposing of a historic building improperly. As the house has no serviceable function, according to county ordinances it can legally be declared surplus by a vote of the board.
