Ga. House 50 candidates to debate in Johns Creek

With State Rep. Brad Raffensperger (R-Johns Creek) running for Georgia’s Secretary of State, a portion of north Fulton County will get a new representative in the Georgia General Assembly.

Running for the open seat is Democrat Angelika Kausche and Republican Kelly Stewart. Next week, voters will get the chance to hear from both of them.

On Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Northview High School, both candidates will participate in a debate hosted by Student Leadership Johns Creek members. The debate will begin at 7 p.m. in the high school’s auditorium at 10625 Parsons Road.

The debate is scheduled to last 90 minutes. Before the debate begins, candidates will do a meet-and-greet for 30 minutes. The event is free to attend and open to the public.

Kausche grew up in Germany and moved to the U.S. more than two decades ago. She has two master's degrees, in business administration and organizational communication, and was a professor at various colleges in Michigan and North Carolina, according to her website. Her top priorities are investing in public education, securing affordable college education and keeping learning environments safe.

Stewart is a former Johns Creek City Council member and was also the city's mayor pro tem. She has also served on the board of directors for the Georgia Municipal Association and was appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal to serve on the board of directors and school board for the Department of Juvenile Justice. Stewart has a master's degree in city planning from Georgia Tech, a bachelor's degree in public administration from Brenau University and an associate's degree in psychology from Gainesville State College. According to her website, she wants to work on freezing property taxes, recreating Milton County and defunding sanctuary cities and counties.

The candidates will answer questions from nine student moderators on issues facing Johns Creek and Georgia.

Before running for Secretary of State, Raffensperger had been the District 50 State Rep. since 2015. He succeeded Lynne Riley, who was elected to the seat in 2011.
