Emory Johns Creek Hospital will hold a blood drive on Oct. 4 to help replace the low blood supply in the southeast region of the United States after Hurricane Irma.

The storm impacted both the blood and platelet supply in Florida and surrounding areas, the hospital says. More than 50 American Red Cross blood drives were canceled the week the storm hit, resulting in more than 1,300 uncollected blood donations.

Christina Vick, lab director for the hospital, says there’s a crucial need for donations in those hard-hit regions and is urging the metro Atlanta community to donate. Vick says there is especially a need for type-O donors.

The blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in classroom’s A and B of the hospital, 6325 Hospital Parkway.
