Holiday weekend crashes kill 19 across Georgia

Nineteen people were killed in wrecks across the state over the long July 4th holiday weekend, the Georgia State Patrol reported Tuesday.

The GSP began the count at 6 p.m. on Friday and stopped counting at midnight Monday night.

The number of fatalities nearly doubled last year's count of 11 and was two more than the 2009 count of 17, but three less than the 22 fatalities tallied in 2008.

The highest number of July 4th holiday weekend traffic fatalities occurred in 1972, when 34 people were killed in crashes. The lowest number was in 1962 and 1984, when two people were killed.
