The victim of a hit-and-run on I-285 early Saturday died from his injuries, and authorities continued to search for the driver responsible.

The incident tied up traffic for miles after lanes were closed so police could investigate, according to Channel 2 Action News. The victim had not been identified as of Saturday evening.

DeKalb County police believe the man was crossing northbound I-285 just past Exit 40 when he was hit. Police began getting calls about the incident around 4:30 a.m.

Police believe the victim had been in a gray Honda Accord on the shoulder before leaving the vehicle to cross the interstate. After he was hit, he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

While on the scene of the hit-and-run, a DeKalb officer was involved in an accident trying to avoid hitting the victim, according to Channel 2.

“There was an officer that was heading northbound in his personal vehicle, and he swerved to avoid the body in the roadway and hit the median wall," Lt. L.M. Richardson told the TV station. "He’s in fair condition. He’s in the local hospital as well.”
