If you, like most metro Atlanta motorists, are in the habit of driving faster than 55 mph on the top end of I-285, the law is about to shift in your favor.
In September, the speed limit for the Perimeter north of I-20 will not be locked in. Instead, it will vary depending on traffic conditions, and the upper limit will at times go over 55 mph. How much over is set out in a new state policy obtained by the AJC.
The change will match a speed limit increase that took effect late last year on the south end of I-285.
There’s a catch for safety’s sake.
Driving conditions normal? Speed away, within limits.
Driving conditions dangerous? Then … not so fast.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has established a new range of top speeds for the road, and has new technology to show it to drivers.
