Milton City Council Member Burt Hewitt has given notice that he and his family are moving out of the city and he no longer can serve on the council.
Hewitt represented District 1/Post 2 and made his announcement at the Monday, April 23, City Council meeting. His resignation will not officially be accepted by the council until its May 7 meeting, City Manager Steven Krokoff said.
A special election will need to be held in November to fill Hewitt’s vacant seat. His term runs through Dec. 31, 2019.
Hewitt said at the council meeting that he’s learned a lot during his 10 years on the council, “that we’ve got a lot of great people in our city and on our staff.”
“I hope I’ve helped contribute in some small way to the success we’d had as a city, and I appreciate everybody’s support and what everybody’s done for me,” he said.
Hewitt has lived in Milton for more than 15 years and also served as chairman of the Milton Roundup committee, leading a team of citizens in developing the city's inaugural anniversary celebration, according to his council profile. A Columbus, Ga., native, he has a bachelor's degree in marketing from Auburn University, works in the food industry and lives in Milton with his wife Ivey and their four daughters.
