The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted at its June 4 regular meeting to approve a request to retire Sam, a Belgian Malinois dog, from service with the Henry County Police Department.

Sam is nine years old and has served the community for five years has become medically impaired which diminishes his service performance. The Locust Grove Veterinary Clinic issued a statement in April related to Sam’s medical condition, and based on the advice of the veterinarian, officials within the police department asked the county to lease the dog to his handler for one dollar per year for ten years.

The police department has used Belgian Malinois canines successfully for patrol and to detect dangerous drugs, according to county officials.
