Henry County officials recently completed a study on the ongoing upkeep of dams in the county and have proposed a special tax district so that affected homeowners can pay for future repairs over time.
An ordinance in that regard is scheduled for consideration at the July 18 meeting of the Board of Commissioners. Officials have identified 11 dams that are Category 1, meaning damage would affect life and public safety, and those should be addressed as soon as possible, according to the staff report.
A number of homeowners in areas affected by Category 1 dams have spoken out in favor of a special tax district, which could help prevent a huge immediate cost in future years if a dam suffers major damage. Not taking such a step could also lead to high costs for all taxpayers in the way of bridge repair and other repairs in the future, as well as a sharp increase in homeowners insurance for affected residents, according to officials.
