Sandy Springs police are searching for a carjacking suspect who reportedly told his victim “thank you” and shook his hand before stealing his vehicle from a local Kroger.
Incident reports state that the victim — an employee at the Kroger store at 4920 Roswell Road — was sitting inside his vehicle in the store’s parking lot on Sept. 27, when a Hispanic man appeared and tapped on his car window. The victim opened his car door, and the suspect pointed a black semi-automatic, 9 mm handgun ordering him out of the vehicle, police said.
The suspect told the victim to “do what I tell you,” and ordered the Kroger employee to walk to the back of his vehicle and hand over his car keys. The victim then stepped to the curb and was ordered by the suspect to wait 10 minutes before moving.
The suspect shook the victim’s hand and said “thank you” before fleeing the scene in a 2013 Chrysler 300.
Police describe the suspect as English-speaking, in his mid-to-late 40s, 5 feet and 11 inches tall, average build, and wearing a black windbreaker-style jacket, baseball hat and blue jeans.
A witness told Sandy Springs police he observed the victim get out of his vehicle, talk with the suspect and shake hands with him before the suspect left the scene. It was not clear in the reports whether the witness was aware that an auto theft was occurring.
