Adopting a pet just got much cheaper

April is National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Month and includes National Pet Parents Day (April 29), Adopt a Shelter Pet Day (April 30), and National Hairball Awareness Day (April 25). In recognition of those special occasions and to honor dedicated animal control officers, the Gwinnett Animal Welfare and Enforcement Division has cut adoption fees to $45 for dogs.

Dogs and cats up for adoption at the shelter are examined, vaccinated and neutered or spayed by Animal Welfare staff veterinarians, so they are ready to go home on the day of adoption.

Shelter fees are typically $90 for a dog. Cat adoptions are $30.

If adoption is not an option, animal lovers can volunteer at the shelter or donate supplies or money to help the shelter improve the health of the animals, increase the number of adoptions and rescues, and continue to offer pet care education free to the community.

The shelter is open for adoptions 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville. Information: 770-339-3200.

City approves ‘Dream Big’ mural for Hill Street wall

The Duluth City Council has authorized the City Manager to execute a contract with Brenda Ehly for a mural art project along the Hill Street retaining wall between State Route 120 and West Lawrenceville Street. According to the artist, “the mural design titled, ‘Dream Big’ depicts a cohort of ants embarking on a routine mission. While the majority immediately get down to the business of meeting their quotas and the expectations of those at home, a lone ant dares to dream on a grander scale… the day-to-day checklists of life can sometimes feel like pushing a boulder (or an olive depending on one’s stature) uphill.”

To help build community, Ehly plans to recruit volunteers from Duluth so that one or two individuals can help each day as the mural is installed. Funding for this Duluth Public Art Commission approved project is allocated in the Public Art Acquisition budget.
