The Gwinnett County woman hospitalized due to infection by flesh-eating bacteria is in stable condition, her husband told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Sunday.
“She’s doing a little bit better,” David Martinez said. “It’s just an up and down roller coaster right now.”
“Initially it was minute-by-minute and hour-by-hour. And it’s day-by-day now and that’s good,” he added.
Doctors do not know how Cindy Martinez, 34, got the infection, her husband said.
The couple met as Marines in their 20s and have two young children. David Martinez is a Gwinnett County police officer.
The infection has forced doctors to surgically remove dead muscle and tissue. She may face multiple amputations, Martinez said.
But Martinez said his wife's survival so far is truly a miracle, and one that has brought his family closer to God.
“As a husband and father I wanted her to stay here, but if that was not what was in His plans, I was able to accept that,” he said. “As long as I accept Him and my family accepts Him and we do everything in His will, everything will be OK.”
As of Sunday afternoon, an online fundraising page had collected more than $43,000 for the Martinez family.
