Gwinnett Commissioners agreed Dec. 15 to seek a $100,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Combined with a required match of $900,000 in SPLOST funds, the county will renovate and improve the Mountain Park Park athletic field complex, including the development of a multi-purpose synthetic turf field for football, lacrosse and soccer.

The renovation of the football field at this 44-acre park at 5050 Five Forks Trickum Road in Lilburn is part of the 2004 Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The plan originally proposed development of a new football complex on acquired land.

Due to the scarcity of undeveloped land in this area, the department chose to renovate the existing field. The current field must be closed during rain events, sometimes for as much as one or two days after rain.

Synthetic turf can be played on immediately after rain and does not require the heavy maintenance and resodding of natural turf.
