Gwinnett commissioners recently agreed to a $531,000 contract with Bulletproof It, LLC for the purchase of rifle plate carriers and armor plates for the Gwinnett County Police Department. This is standard issue equipment for all officers.

These rifle plate carriers and armor plates are inserted into ballistic or “bullet-proof” vests to absorb the impact and provide protection against handgun, shotgun and rifle rounds, as well as explosive shrapnel. This tactical gear can also provide protection from knife attacks.

Vests can protect police officers from bullet penetration, but heavy bullets can still result in blunt force trauma. They can save a life but can’t prevent all injury.
