A 51-year-old Gwinnett County man died Saturday night when he was thrown from his Ford Explorer during a crash on I-20 that flipped the vehicle and sent it into a concrete wall.

The crash occurred at 10:12 p.m. in the eastbound lanes just past Factory Shoals Road near Austell. Tommy L. Pierson, of Lawrenceville, drove his green 1994 Explorer into a neighboring lane and struck a 2006 International tractor truck, according to Cobb County police.

The collision caused Pierson to lose control of the vehicle, sending it into a spin, before it went airborne, police said. It flipped and landed on its roof into a wall. Pierson was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, but died from his injuries, police said.

No charges will be filed in the crash, police said.

The driver of the truck, 23-year-old James R. Carver, of Marietta, was not injured.
