A 20-year-old Buford man molested a family friend over the course of four years, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office said.

Edgar Rivera-Lopez was convicted of two counts of aggravated child molestation on May 2 after a three-day trial.

The abuse began when Rivera-Lopez was 13 and the victim was 7, according to a release from the DA’s office. Rivera-Lopez’s mother and the victim’s mother were close friends, so the boys would see each other often, according to the DA’s office.

The victim reported the abuse to his mother in 2015, when he was 11 and Rivera-Lopez was 17. The victim had become “withdrawn” and had trouble sleeping, his mother told police. A medical exam revealed evidence of sexual abuse, according to the DA’s office.

Rivera-Lopez’s sentencing has been deferred to a later date. The maximum sentence for an aggravated child molestation conviction is life in prison.
