A 67,000-pound top has been placed this week on a new air traffic control tower at Cobb County Airport-McCollum Field.

Construction on the $2.9 million tower should be complete in January. After the 77-foot tower, funded by state and federal grants, is operating, the existing 42-foot tower will come down.

Growth has pushed upgrades at the airport that opened south of Kennesaw in 1960. A $799, 000 customs inspection facility is expected to open at the airport next summer. The airport has about 170 take-offs and landings a day.
