The Hall-Of-Fame career of the Braves’ Chipper Jones is coming to a dramatic close. The iconic third baseman announced his retirement prior to the start of the season, and in his swan song, he is carrying the team toward the playoffs.
If the Braves do not make the playoffs, you only have nine more chances to see the legend play at Turner Field. In the immortal words of the famed educator Ed Rooney, nine times. Nine times left to hear Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne as Chipper strides to the plate. Nine times left to see opposing outfielders move closer to the outfield wall when Chipper’s name is announced on the PA system by the booming voice of Casey Motter. Nine times. That’s it and then Chipper’s sweet swing will be gone forever.
There are a million reasons not to go see Chipper play one more time. School is back in session, the games end too late, you can’t afford tickets, etcetera. I get it. I just don’t want traffic to be the reason you avoid making the trip to Turner Field to see Chipper and the Braves play.
Traffic can certainly be a bear heading downtown, but I don’t want you to miss one more chance to see Chipper in action. So here, once again, by popular demand in my super-secret, traffic avoiding, backdoor, shortcut to Turner Field:
- Take Northside Drive south past the Georgia Dome.
- Turn left onto McDaniel Street.
- Take McDaniel Street south to Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.
- Turn left onto Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.
- Go east on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.
- Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard will take right to the west side of Turner Field
There are plenty of parking lots along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard. From there it’s a quick walk underneath I-75/85 and boom you are at Turner Field.
I have taken this route ever since Turner Field opened and after going to hundreds of games, I’ve never missed a first pitch. Even better, getting home is a lot easier from this side of Turner Field. You can expect brief delays leaving the parking lot but once you are back on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard it’s a quick shot back home with minimal delays.
You have nine more opportunities to take this shortcut and see a Braves legend. Don’t let traffic keep you from witnessing history.
