The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has agreed to accept $70,000 in federal funds to help prosecute crimes committed against women.

Commissioners also approved a required, 25% match of $23,333 in local funds as a condition of receiving the STOP Violence Against Women Act funds. The total program cost is $93,333 for the period Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2020, staff said in a report to commissioners.

“The grant enables the continuation of the Violence Against Women Prosecution Unit in the District Attorney’s Office by partially funding a full time prosecutor,” staff said. “The unit prosecutes sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking crimes against women.”
