The city of Canton and Cherokee County School District on Friday finalized the paperwork on a land-swap deal clearing the way for school officials to construct a new/replacement administration building.

The Cherokee County Board of Education voted March 19 to swap the so-called Buildings A and B and property in downtown Canton with a 16-acre city tract at the Bluffs at Technology Park on Bluffs Parkway. School Superintendent Frank Petruzielo had earlier recommended the board replace Buildings A and B with a new admin building on the downtown site, bringing together employees scattered across several locations. That plan fell by the wayside as opposition surfaced to tearing down what some considered historic structures and as the land swap was proposed instead.

With the paperwork now finished, school district officials will solicit contractor bids to build the new administrative center, with a goal of having the building finished in about one year.
