Provide rides for cancer patients
Cancer patients need help getting to their treatment because they do not have access to transportation. The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers for its Road to Recovery program, which provides free transportation to those battling cancer in DeKalb County. Free training is provided to volunteer drivers. Requirements include a valid driver’s license and good driving record, proof of insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition. The Society conducts criminal background and DMV checks on drivers who sign up for Road To Recovery. Volunteers can commit as many or as few hours as their schedule allows. There is a specific need for volunteer drivers in the Lithonia area.

Learn to be an advocate for children in need
The increase in the number of foster children in Bartow County continues to grow. Bartow Court Appointed Special Advocates, a program of Advocates for Children, needs volunteers to help the children.
CASAs are volunteers that assess a child’s situation by talking to any one that knows the child and report directly to the judge what is in the best interest of the child. The goal of a CASA is to advocate for a child in court until they have a safe and permanent home.
To be a CASA Volunteer, you must be over 21, complete 40 hours of training, and undergo a background check. and go through training classes.
When: Evening classes begin Tuesday. Daytime classed begin Aug. 20
