‘Pick It Up Powder Springs’ a community clean-up
The city of Powder Springs’ Community Ambassadors invite residents, students and business owners to become Powder Springs Proud Volunteers by participating in the annual city-wide trash pick up event. The tradition began a few years ago when Community Ambassadors connected the community with local government by spearheading community-wide cleanup days in both the spring and fall.
Led by the Rev. Roger Vest of the First United Methodist Church, the ambassadors with the assistance of local schools, churches, businesses, and citizen volunteers have removed over 2,000 pounds of trash from local rights-of-way and the trail system in previous years. City of Powder Springs, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Director, Trudy Crunkleton stated: “The Pick it Up events were a big success last year because of the support from our community. I would like to encourage everyone who lives or works in Powder Springs to come out this year. Service and pride in one’s community is what makes Powder Springs so special and such a great place to live.”

Clayton County Water Authority hosting Rivers Alive stream cleanup
Clayton County Water Authority officials are putting out a call for community volunteers to help with the county’s annual Rivers Alive Stream Cleanup being held this year at Panhandle Park on October 28.
Every fall, CCWA’s Stormwater Management Section hosts this event for residents to work together to clean trash, litter and other debris from a local river or creek. This year’s event will take place around Hurricane Creek.
“This event is great for scout troops, environmental clubs, church groups and families. The volunteers learn the importance of keeping our local waterways clean and they have fun,” says CCWA Water Resources Engineer Shayla Nealy.
Volunteers should wear outdoor clothing and waterproof boots. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. After a safety briefing, volunteers will spend about an hour cleaning up around Hurricane Creek. Following the cleanup, volunteers will enjoy a hot dog lunch prepared by members of the Jonesboro Kiwanis Club.
Clayton County’s event is part of the state-wide Rivers Alive volunteer cleanup event that targets all waterways in the state of Georgia, including streams, rivers, lakes, beaches and wetlands.
