Georgia State University eliminated 110 positions this week, 25 of which were filled, to save about $4 million.
None of the filled jobs were faculty and most were administrative support positions that “do not directly affect students,” spokeswoman Andrea Jones said.
The cuts were necessitated by the 3 percent budget cuts Gov. Nathan Deal ordered nearly all state agencies to take because of the struggling economy. The permanent reduction equals more than $5 million for Georgia State, President Mark Becker wrote in a memo Monday.
“With the overwhelming majority of our budget tied to people, it is impossible to absorb a large, permanent budget cut without having it affect people,” Becker wrote. “I deeply regret that this reduction in staff is necessary.”
The college has also postponed maintenance projects, cut money for travel and left dozens of vacant staff and faculty positions open.
The university previously eliminated 300 jobs in 2009 to save about $9 million.
