The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a $4.6 million contract to create a roundabout in rural Cherokee County.

The project is for where Hightower Road (Ga. 369) crosses Ball Ground Road (Ga. 372) between Ball Ground and Free Home. C.W. Matthews Contracting Inc., Marietta, is to complete the work by June 30, 2019.

The aim is to reduce the number and severity of accidents and improve operating efficiency at the intersection, currently a four-way stop with no turn lanes, according to a 2014 GDOT study for the project. At the time, Hightower had a daily vehicle volume of 10,310, and Ball Ground, 6,050. Both roads are classified as two-lane rural major collectors with 55 mph speed limits.

The roundabout was the second-largest award of 24 contracts totaling $92.3 million around the state announced last week by GDOT.

The largest, for $56.5 million, is for the third leg of a major widening and reconstruction of Ga. 140 in Floyd and Bartow counties near Adairsville. GP’s Enterprises Inc. of Auburn, Ga., is to widen 6.7 miles of Ga. 140 from two to four lanes with a median. Work is to be completed June 30, 2021.
