The funeral was being held Monday morning for Lillian Miles Lewis, the wife of U.S. Rep. John Lewis.

The service was scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Lillian Lewis died a week ago at the age of 73.

She played a pivitol role in the civil rights legend’s move into a political career and forged her own career as an educator.

The Lewises, who had been married 44 years, met at a 1967 New Year’s Eve party.

Lillian Lewis is survived by her husband and her son, John-Miles Lewis.
