The city councils of Alpharetta and Sandy Springs this week approved a request by Fulton County to extend intergovernmental agreements for six months to give the county time to bid out a new contract for an animal control provider. The Johns Creek City Council deferred Fulton’s request to a later meeting.

A county vendor provides animal control services to Fulton cities – controlling rabies, investigating bites and cruelty complaints, and impounding and caring for animals, according to an Alpharetta staff report. The current, three-year agreement with the cities ends June 30.

To provide uninterrupted service, Fulton has asked the cities to extend their agreements and their existing payments until Dec. 31. Alpharetta would pay $22,000, and Sandy Springs, $32,000, over the six-month extension, officials of the two cities say.

“This extension will allow the county the opportunity to competitively bid a new contract with a vendor that would commence on Jan. 1, 2018,” Fulton Chairman John H. Eaves said in a letter Sandy Springs; the same letter presumably went to all Fulton cities.
