The Forsyth County School Board has allocated an additional $5 million for school safety measures, bringing proposed spending on school security to $7 million as part of a proposed bond issue.

Forsyth residents will vote May 22 on issuing $295 million in school general obligation bonds for capital improvements.

The school board decided to increase the safety budget April 17 after its School Safety Task Force presented a comprehensive assessment of all campuses, facilities and procedures. Information: www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/safeschools

Among the task force’s recommendations: Adopt standardized district procedures for visitor check-in/check-out; install double entries in new schools; add more lockdown buttons and interior doors that can be closed and locked; maintain the goal of one school resource officer on every campus; evaluate adding a second officer to each school; hire new staff to work with high-risk students, their families and others; and conduct Code Red Lockdown drills at least twice a year and an active shooter drill by next spring.
