A new therapeutic recreation program for persons with intellectual and physical disabilities and at-risk youth has been announced by the Forsyth County Parks & Recreation Department.

The initiative launches this summer with adaptive sports and fitness programs, special events and other instructional recreational programs, officials said.

Therapeutic recreation will be based at the Central Park Recreation Center but will offer programs countywide, officials said. The program will be headed by Jeff Jones, therapeutic recreation supervisor, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the field and most recently was deputy director of parks and recreation in Haines City, Fla.

Working with Forsyth County Special Olympics and the Forsyth County schools, “it was determined that more programs for individuals with specific needs were needed in order to facilitate the development of leisure and recreation skills, socialization, independence and overall quality of life,” said Director of Parks & Recreation Jim Pryor.
